Every year on the 22nd of April, I’m so passionate about celebrating
International Earth Day. This is the perfect opportunity for me to
teach our learners all about our precious planet and how we should
protect it. Our 4th graders learned several ways in which we can help
preserve our environment, by applying the 3 R’s namely, reduce,
reuse and recycle. Not only does this encourage our learners to make
a difference and respect the world we live in, it also raises awareness
at home, at school and in our neighbourhoods.
We discussed the benefits of trees and how they affect our world we
live in. Each student had an opportunity to plant 4 different types of
seeds and made use of biodegradable containers. By planting a seed
and observing germination, it will encourage them to learn more
ways to protect our planet and give back to the community.
They thoroughly enjoyed this “hands on” lesson and getting their
hands messy! The highlight is learning about the growth and
development process from a tiny seed to a plant. Furthermore, our
learners will be able to pinpoint the elements a seed needs in order
for it to germinate and grow.
Additional Earth Day activities were compiling lapbooks. This reminds
us how important it is to protect our planet and everyone has the
responsibility and a part to play in doing so. In our lapbooks, we
learned about serious problems like pollution and climate change.
We discussed ways how we need to work together to solve the
problems we are facing. Simple things like walking or cycling to
school is a good start.
Together we can do more to protect our planet and if we look after
it, it will definitely look after all of us!
